After graduating in 1981 from the University of Rennes, with
a thesis on Lower Devonian miospores, Alain LE HÉRISSÉ joined the CNRS
andwas seconded to the Paleontology team in Brest. He received his doctorate
from Brest University in 1988 for a thesis on Silurian acritarchs and
prasinophycean phycomata of the Gotland succession in Sweden.
He has concentrated his research activities largely on
Paleozoic phytoplanktonic assemblages, particularly acritarchs
and other microalgae, but has also studied mazuelloids. Specific interests are
on the evolution of oceanic phytoplankton: their taxonomy, biodiversity and
distribution in space and time. Alain has worked extensively on microalgae from
Northern Gondwana, South America and Northern Europe.
As well as producing a suite of academic publications, part
of his scientific activity is devoted to industrial applications of his
expertise in the field of phytoplankton biostratigraphy and palynofacies studies
for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. This activity and specific courses for
training engineers are developed through a consulting work service (work in PPS),
or by contracts between the CNRS or UBO and Oil Companies.
Present Research Activities:
-
Supervision of theses and post-doctoral research [Information].
-
Impact of the Late Ordovician glaciation on phytoplanctonic
associations: North ans Western Africa (Mauritania, Algeria, Libya, Chad),
Middle East (Turkey, Saudi Arabia), Northern Europe (Baltica).
-
Correlations between the isotopic events, the environmental
cyclicity and changes in the diversity of palynomorphs in the Silurian of
Gotland, Sweden.
-
Palynostratigraphy of the Devonian series from North Africa
(Tunisia, Libya) and South America (Brazil, Bolivia).
-
Organic sedimentation (palynofacies studies) in more recent
series of the Cretaceous and Tertiary in North Kenya and Pleistocene/Holocene in
East African Rift.
