From June 15 to July 25, 2008, 14 students from Brest and Paris Universities (France) embarked successively on the Research Vessel Marion Dufresne operated by the French Polar Institute (IPEV) in the Atlantic Ocean. They joined international scientific teams of two oceanographic cruises (AMOCINT, June 15 - July 10, and MICROSYSTEMS, July 15 - July 25), including 23 students from 6 different European countries.

Students were integrated in the scientific teams and were on duty during two 4-hour shifts per day. During their shifts ("watches"), they participated in the exploitation of the cores, from their recovery, cutting, opening, archiving, all the way to their physical parameter measurements and description. Additionally, classes took place between the watches and in transit times, taught by the scientists on board. Students were also in charge of writing the contents of this web site.

The "University of the Sea" is a unique opportunity for students to get high-level training in marine geology, oceanography and geophysics in the framework of an actual research cruise. In 2008, the research was dedicated to paleo-climatology, sedimentology, and paleo-oceanography. The scientific teams included scientists from Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland and Ukrainia. During the first cruise (AMOCINT), the Education Programme on board was also effective through the Operation called "Teachers at Sea": School teachers from France, Norway, Portugal, Spain, United States of America were invited on board in order to participate to the AMOCINT cruise, to learn from coring at sea, and to enjoy the exciting life of scientists at sea. During AMOCINT Cruise, conferences on board were organized by Carlo LAJ, responsible of this Programme sponsored by the European Geophysical Union (EGU). During MICROSYSTEMS Cruise, this task was held by the PIs and by the responsible of the University of the Sea. The two teaching Programmes have received the support of "Universités Européennes d'Eté" by the "Ministère Français de l'Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche" and has been labelled 10th and 11th "Universités Flottantes" by Institut Polaire Paul-Emile Victor (IPEV).
